Chinese Girl Dies In Internet Addiction Rehab

Business Week –  In 2008, China’s government added an entry to the list of conditions classified as mental illnesses: “Internet addiction.” According to numerous reports in state-run media, China’s young people were spending too much time in Internet cafes, ignoring family or work to play online games into the wee hours, sometimes neglecting to eat, drink, or sleep, and endangering their own health. Anxiety about addiction to screen time gave rise to a dubious new line of businesses: boot camps, often run by ex-military personnel, promising to help wayward youth kick the habit. But investigative reports published in recent days by Beijing Newsand the Mirror reveal abusive conditions, leading to the death of at least one student, at the Zhengzhou Boqiang New Idea Life Training School—which billed itself as an Internet-addiction recovery camp in eastern Henan province. A 19-year-old girl, referred to as Guo Lingling (this may be a pseudonym), was allegedly struck and kicked repeatedly by her so-called instructors after failing to ask permission to go to the bathroom. An autopsy report showed she died from skull injuries and brain damage.

I hate that I’ve become that dude who’s always connected to his phone and the internet. Always worried about whats going on on twitter and the blogosphere. Can’t go a few minutes without worrying if Barstool has been updated enough. I’ve even thought about trying to really change my ways and become a real human again.

But fuck that. Thats all out the window now. This Chinese chick is fucking dead from trying to break her internet addiction. It was so hard to kick the habit that soldiers had to literally beat it out of her. Kicked her and abused her till she was life sheets. I’d rather just continue to refresh twitter and watch internet porn and stare at the computer screen until I go blind. Its kinda like smokers who’d rather just rip cigarettes and die of lung cancer rather than go through the hassle of quitting. I’ll just stay addicted to the internet until I’m blind and alone and sexually warped, thank you very much.
